Organising Spices and Dried Legumes

Organising spices and dried legumes

A well-organised kitchen starts with smart storage of spices and dried legumes. When you know exactly where each ingredient lives, cooking becomes faster, more enjoyable and less stressful.

Spices are best kept in small, airtight containers, away from light and heat. A dedicated shelf or a neatly labelled drawer lets you find any spice in seconds. Avoid storing them next to the hob — heat and moisture quickly degrade their aromas.

Dried legumes — chickpeas, lentils, beans, dried peas, soy — are ideally stored in glass jars with airtight lids. Clear glass gives you instant visibility of your stock, while the airtight seal keeps out moisture and pests. Label each jar with its contents and the date it was filled.

The FIFO system (First In, First Out) is essential for avoiding waste: always put new stock at the back and use what you bought earlier first.

An organised kitchen doesn’t necessarily mean an Instagram-worthy one — it means a functional one that saves you time and money. Happy cooking and an orderly household!
